Dragon’s Lair’s Picks: Hot Comics of the Week (December 24, 2013)

Christmas, Christmas time is here… And that means new comic day is Tuesday this week, not Wednesday. Plan accordingly on your quest for the hot new comic books of the week.

As always, weekly picks are provided by our friends over at Dragon’s Lair and uneducated commentary is solely mine.

Comic book top picks of the week – Week of December 23

Fairy Quest Trade Papaerback: Volume 1 – Outlaws

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? That Jenkins and Ramos have taken an already oversaturated market – fairy tale “re-imagining” – and are trying to stuff another title down its throat.

I’ll still give this one a chance for two reasons. First, get an eyeful of the absolutely gorgeous artwork. Second, the tone of the comic seems a bit lighter than the other fairy tale titles on the shelf.

Justice League #26

Regular readers may remember that the copy editor writing DC’s descriptions was having punctuation issues. Specifically, an over use of exclamation marks!

This week, they need to ease up on the question marks. Check out the description of Justice League #26:

“A FOREVER EVIL tie-in! Why has the Crime Syndicate really come to our Earth? What are their darkest secrets?

And how will their actions fundamentally change the Justice League as we know it?

Meanwhile, Grid controls the world’s power and communications, but what does he truly want from the Syndicate?

Plus, a member of the League struggling to survive plots a path of return…and revenge.”

My head is spinning… Too many questions…

Deceivers #1 (of 6)

The number of quality miniseries available in comics today makes me happy. Self-contained stories are a gift for casual comic readers. An action/comedy comic with the old “hire a crook to catch a crook” story angle has The Deceivers near the top of my list for picks this week.

Avengers #24.NOW

First off, what’s going on in the Marvel Universe that the Hulk is wearing Iron Man armor? Seems unecessary.

Also, it says #1 really big on the cover, but it’s actually issue 24. Marvel is concocting some bizarre numbering schemes to trick people like me into buying comics. It won’t work again Marvel! Now that the Dragon’s Lair staff is helping me with my picks, I’m onto you.

Here’s the description:

“ROGUE PLANET” Part 1 of 5

Captain America and Iron Man plan for the next version of the Avengers. A runaway planet is on a collision course with Earth. A visitor from the future helps save the day.

Avengers #24.NOW = Avengers #1 IN ALL-NEW MARVEL NOW!”

Avengers #24 is chock full of that explosive, steamy “planning” action that comics fans have come to know and love.

And that is not meant to be read sarcastically. The Avengers has been all about planning the Avengers for as far back as I can recall. Remember this explosive issue?

The best Avengers issues are the ones where they discuss who’s in the Avengers. You find out what a sorority run by superheroes would be like.

Doctor Who Special 2013 #1

I’ve been looking at adding the comic books to my Doctor Who multimedia experience for a long while now. Since this blog started in July, actually. This looks like my best chance for entry. I’m putting out a call for all Whovians who are not fans of the comic to pick this one up so we can discuss. I’l be posting a review later this week. Here’s the description:

“In this special one-shot story celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, a strange force flings the TARDIS and the Doctor into our own universe! Once here, the Doctor encounters a 10-year-old girl who happens to be a huge fan of the Doctor Who TV show. The Doctor grapples with being a fictional character and monsters lurking at the girl’s school on the way to coming face-to-face with the actor who portrays him, Matt Smith! “

Could it be “to cute”? Sure. But it could also be a lot of fun. That’s why The Doctor Who Special 2013 is my Casual Comics Guy Pick of the Week.

Stay tuned for a review later this week. I’ll be posting remotely from Legend Comics. Be on the lookout for the guy in the Tardis t-shirt and sports coat working on a laptop that may or may not have a Doctor Who sticker on it (it all depends on if my Xmas gift shows up in the mail on time).

In the meantime, support your local comic book shop.

Cheers!
