Eeeeiiiiks… Another week and the comics seem to be coming fast and furious. The guys over at Dragon’s Lair Comics and Games have, once again, sent me some titles for your consideration as the “best new comics of the week”. Let’s explore them together, as I once again provide running commentary this week’s hot comic picks.
Powergirl Powertrip Trade Paperback

Yes, please.
I don’t know what Powergirl has been up to in the issues covered by this trade. I don’t know that I need to know. The main selling point of this comic is Amanda Connor’s artwork. Maybe you can all ignore how Connor draws Power Girl, but few men can…
The solicit reads:
“Every Power Girl story illustrated by Amanda Conner is collected..blahblahblah….”
I’m sorry, world… I’m only human. Look at that art.
Royals Masters Of War #1 (of 6)

I get it. We’ve all got Olympic fever. So here’s an international title. Marvel has failed time and again to get people interested in heroes from the UK. The Black Knight? Not sure anyone cares…
Other than Vertigo titles like “V for Vendetta”, I’m not sure that Marvel or DC have given us a great title based in Great Britain. Please let me know if I’m wrong.
But with my interest in our friends overseas at an all-time high (thanks Doctor Who), I’ll give this one a shot.
Kind of a complicated solicit, but here you are:
“The year is 1940. As the Blitz destroys London and kills thousands, the Royal Family looks on. But in this world, the only people with special abilities are Royalty, and the purer the bloodline, the greater their abilities. So why don’t they stop the carnage with their powers? A truce between the Earth’s nobles has kept them out of our wars-until now. When England’s Prince Henry can take no more and intervenes, will it stop the planet’s suffering or take it to another level? Writer Rob Williams (Judge Dredd: Trifecta, Low Life, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN and Daken) and artist Simon Coleby (The Authority, Judge Dredd: Year One and Trifecta) team up to bring you this epic of World War proportions. History will be transformed in a way you’ve never seen before.”
Legion Of Superheroes Great Darkness Saga TPB New Edition

Jeez… It’s a heavy DC week this week. I always liked the Legion, mostly for the reasons I loved most comics in the 70s and 80s. Lots of drama. Cool flight rings.
I never got Darkseid, though… That guy just always seems mad about something.
Leave the Legion out of this you jerk…
Winter Soldier Bitter March #1 (of 5)

Got it, the new Captain America movie is coming soon. Ad it’s got the “Winter Soldier” in the title.
I thought Bucky was past that whole phase of his career, but fine.
Superior Spider-Man #27

I hear Superior Spider-man is a great title. I have no doubt that this new storyline (“Goblin Nation”) will astound. The cover art itself is kind of genius – the shadows on Spidey’s head kinda look like an arachnid.
Maybe it’s because I tried to pre-register for San Diego Comic Con, but still got frozen out of Friday and Saturday badges, but I’m a little crabby this week. Add that to the Ultimate line’s “Who Killed the Scarlet Witch” Trade this week, and I don’t have the energy or enthusiasm to name a Casual Comics Hot Comic of the Week pick.
(Is it not enough that the 616 made Wanda a villain? Why is she dying in the Ultimates line, too?)
Peace out for this week, good and kind people…
