News and rumors on the casting for Avengers: Age of Ultron is accelerating, so now’s a great time to catch up and reflect on the announcements. Here’s the cast with my casual commentary and arbitrary grades assigned.
Note: I’m only looking at only cast who will appear for the first time in Avengers: Age of Ultron. I’ll get around to the characters introduced in other movies (like The Falcon) in another post.
Ultron: James Spader
I think it’s great that we’re getting Ultron as a villain in Avengers 2. Since Scarlet Witch is in this movie (more on that in a minute), and Ultron created Vision, is it too much to hope that Joss Wheedon will use Avengers 2 as a launching pad for that Vision and the Scarlet Witch TV series I’ve been pining for? Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie has had me skeptical since its announcement. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Marvel “Cosmic” heroes, even though I always wanted to like Nova really badly when I was in junior high. His uniform was just too cool.
Plus, I reviewed a recent issue of Guardians of the Galaxy back in August an was a bit underwhelmed.
But with this new, pretty awesome, photo of the Guardians of the Galaxy lineup, I’m starting to warm up to the concept.
I really like Chris Pratt on “Parks and Rec” and think his casting as “Star-Lord”, is inspired. And, I’m in the middle of Doctor Who series 6, so I’m still a head over heels swooning fanboy for Karen Gillan, who has green skin this time out.
Here’s the official description of the movie.
“From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team — the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the blanace. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.”
It still sounds pretty confusing, but I’ll reserve further judgement until the trailer hits.
